The family in Jing City had raised the wrong girl. Their own daughter, Lin Siwang, grew up in Shanhe Province, and once the mistake came out they brought her back to the city. The girl who had been in her place stayed in the house. The relatives made it plain what they thought of a daughter who had come from the provinces, and the other girl worked to keep her on the outside of things. Lin Siwang sat in class and studied. Her marks put her at the top of her school in the capital, which did not improve things at home. Her city residency came through and she could sit the entrance exam there, so she studied for that.
