Eugene Latham now comes to Selene about once a month. The rest of his time goes to Kristy Unwin, the widow of his brother. When the arrangement started it ran the other way, with Kristy getting one night a month and Selene the rest, and Selene had agreed to it. Eugene's mother demanded it. She has always looked down on Selene as a low-born Omega with no right to be a Luna. After Eugene's brother died in an accident, she told Eugene to father pups with Kristy, whose bloodline the pack considers superior, or lose his claim to become Alpha. Eugene held Selene and told her she was the only one in his heart, that the pack could not go without an Alpha, and that once Kristy was pregnant and he held the title he would announce Selene as his Luna in front of everyone. Selene loved him and chose to believe him. Then Kristy's pregnancy is announced, together with her marriage to Eugene, and the Luna's ring is on Kristy's finger. Selene understands that he is no longer a mate who belongs to her alone. She fakes her own death and leaves the pack, with no intention of coming back.
