Ellie Jones is the daughter of a strict pastor. At her first high school party she sleeps with Asher King, a member of the Red Snakes gang, and loses her virginity to him. The two begin seeing each other. Ellie becomes pregnant. Her father and the Red Snakes both move to separate the pair and to take the baby once it is born. Claudia, who has been after Asher herself, joins in, with the backing of Ellie's father and an uncle who is the sheriff. The pair are pursued, lied to and put in danger. Asher swears to protect Ellie and the child whatever it costs him. Ellie moves in with Asher. Their new address is traced. Donovan, who leads the Red Snakes, tells Asher he will be killed if he stays with her, since the gang's first rule forbids any involvement with an outsider.
