Nuclear medicine is Charlie Clare's field, and he holds a professorship in it in the United States of Norland. He gives the career up to be at home with his wife and daughter. Neither of them treats it as a sacrifice. They give their trust to Isaac instead, the man who has been Charlie's rival for his wife. Charlie leaves them and goes back to the Unicorn Project. He designed it himself, across the whole of his working life, to treat the neuro-skeletal birthmark his daughter was born with. The work uses him up and he says nothing about that to either of them. When the family comes back together the distance is worse than it was before, and his wife and daughter meet him with the same resentment, still not knowing what he is spending himself on.
