Wren Chase cannot read well, and people around her know she was born outside her father's marriage. Because of this, the households she moves through treat her as someone not worth bothering with, someone easy to dismiss. She stops waiting for their opinion to change on its own. She starts working with what she has, a quick memory for details and a refusal to back down when people underestimate her. Small tasks and small tests go her way more often than expected, and the people who wrote her off begin to notice.
