Taotie Girl Descends

Mason Harris caught a small girl eating a meal she had no money for, and he took her home as his daughter. The girl is Rosie, the cub of the Taotie, a beast known for its appetite, and she had come out of the world of myth into this one. It is the eleventh year of the Republic, and Mason commands troops and has three sons. Rosie can swallow misfortune and turn away the breath of death, and she uses it on the household again and again, so Mason and the three sons come to care for her. Dora Harris arrived here out of a book, knowing how the story was supposed to run, and she considers the place of the family's lucky child to be hers. She goes to Peter North, who has been Mason's enemy for years, and the two of them set things up against Rosie without any of it working. Rosie finds the third son, who was lost years before, and wakes Mason's wife Thea Innes after ten years of sleep.
