Anya Rhodes takes breakup jobs for a living, and the order that comes in asks for a marriage to be ended. The marriage is her own. It was placed at the request of Lilith Crowe, who has been passing herself off as the daughter of a rich family and pushing herself at Anya's husband, Soren Wolfe, in the hope that the wife will file for divorce and leave the position open. What Lilith hands over includes proof of the affair. Soren is taken for a good husband. He has been put off by the scar left on Anya's stomach after the birth of their daughter, and his parents, who call her a daughter of their own, complain behind her back that the child was a girl. The family lives on her money and thinks of Soren as a young man who made himself. Anya's father is the richest man in the city, and the company Soren calls his own work was a small firm she handed him when they married so he would have something to practise on. Once she has all of it, Anya starts working against him. Soren moves assets out of the marriage and presses her to sign the divorce. Their daughter is taken during this.
