Abnormal Trial Marriage

Emilia Bennett is passing herself off as a wife for money. She gets kicked in the head by a donkey and comes to understanding that she is inside a novel, written in as the filler character whose job is to make her cousin, the one all the relatives adore, look better by comparison, and whose ending is a bad one. To get out from under that, she marries William Carter, the richest man in the city, who has a reputation outside his household as a cold-blooded lunatic. She treats being a full-time wife as a job with a high salary and treats him as her employer. On those terms the two of them begin a trial marriage that does not work like anyone else's. Inside the arrangement something she did not contract for starts to grow.
