In a family where the elders arrange the marriages, Charles Bennett was matched with Hazel Monroe and the two were married in secret, without any feeling between them. Charles is a cardiac surgeon, cold with people. Hazel is a resident still in training, and she is mischievous and loud, and the daily business of living with her puts color into his days. A rival for Hazel appears. Charles works out what he feels, and drunk, he says out loud that he is jealous. Hazel had already come to love him over the time they spent together. She learns that what he wants is pediatrics, and that the weight of what his family expects of him has kept him from it, and she tells him to go after it.
