Reaper's Forbidden Vow

Serena wants to be alive again. She is the daughter of a rich family, and on the night before her wedding a car crash, passed off as an accident, put her outside her own body. The one who meets her there is a Reaper, cold and hard to read, and he tells her that her name is not in the register of the dead. That leaves her one way back. Within thirty days she has to collect three tears cried for her in earnest. If she fails, her soul comes apart when the time runs out. The trouble is the people who ought to be crying. From outside her body she can see that her fiancé's gentleness has something else under it, and that a plan to take her family's property is moving forward now that she is out of the way. Her relatives put on grief for show, and the friends she trusted turn out to be calculating. She goes from one to the next looking for a real tear and is let down each time. Each letdown brings her closer to the centre of the plot. It also does something to the Reaper. Pieces of a memory he had lost start to come back to him, and he begins to look at her as if he had known her before.
