Mary Ross has a rare blood type, and a crime ring that needs it takes her. Her mother Esme owns the building where Hunter Ruse rents a room, and Hunter is the one who goes after the men who took her. Hunter had been an undefeated kickboxing champion until someone drugged him before a match he could not afford to lose, and he lost it. The argument with his opponent after the fight ended with his own daughter dead. His wife left him, the association threw him out, and he spent the years that followed delivering parcels. Esme and Mary came into his life during that stretch. Getting Mary back means fighting again, in death matches with no association behind them. Delivery drivers, stallholders and other people nobody in the city looks at twice help him work out where the ring is keeping her, and he goes in against the men running it.
