Eva Sterling's engagement to the Vance son is a route to the Sterling Group's property, and the Vances have been working it that way. Victor Sterling built the group himself and is worth billions. He and his wife go back to the home town quietly, without saying who they are, to look at the family their daughter is marrying into. In the market Victor helps the groom's mother out of trouble. She accuses him of taking her jewellery, and her family makes as much of it in public as they can. His wife's heart gives out in the middle of it and the medicine she needs is in the Vances' hands. Victor pays what they ask, which is to crawl between a man's legs in front of the market, and he still says nothing about who he is. Eva has put on a party for her fiancé. Victor arrives at it in a suit and shows the gold thumb ring that goes with the head of the family, and the Vances get down on their knees. Eva calls the engagement off with the guests still in the room.
