The four great houses were supposed to be guarding the Four-Sided Cauldron, the vessel that held the country's fortune steady. A hundred years ago men inside those houses were working with the Japanese, and by the time it was in the open the war was everywhere. Ji Xue, daughter of the Yellow Emperor and the drought goddess Hanba, went into a long sleep in the old Qi mansion to keep the cauldron out of their hands. She is under a curse that will not let her die, and she keeps herself going on blood. A century later Qi Wang, a son of the Qi family, is being hunted and hides in that same mansion. His blood wakes her. She tells him he is her servant now and her supply. He objects out loud and does not keep away from her. The cauldron is taken again and the two of them go after it. On the way they turn up things the Qi family had kept quiet.
