On her twenty-ninth birthday Sylvia Xu is told she has a rare incurable illness and less than a year. The same day, Preston Pei is in a car accident. He wakes without her in his memory. What he does remember is Aria Jiang, who spent years wanting him and getting nowhere. He had spoiled Sylvia to a degree their friends made jokes about; now he wants the marriage ended and is not particular about method. He says things designed to make her leave and does things designed to leave marks, one after another, and she absorbs them while carrying a diagnosis she has not told him about. Eventually there is nothing left in her that responds to him, and she goes. Her absence is what brings him back to himself. He starts looking for her.
