Lawrence, a subcontractor for a construction firm in the provincial city, comes home to visit his mother's grave and the villagers ask him to build it. He agrees to pay for the work out of his own pocket.
The work goes badly. Some of the villagers slack off or sabotage it, and others report him to the authorities, saying he is in it for his own gain. He is arrested. A friend brings the official approval papers and the head of Taoyuan Village speaks up for him, and he is cleared.
Once out he thinks about giving up. His friend and the village head talk him into carrying on, and he goes back to building the road to Taoyuan Village. The ground there is difficult and he works through it as a professional, which brings the villagers round. He also finds that a rival contractor has been laying road with substandard materials and makes it public.
