Don't Mess with the Retired

Nathan Carter disappeared under another name for fifteen years. In that time he developed the Skycore Chip, which broke a foreign monopoly on the technology. He then retired and went home to his wife and children. During the years he was away, his wife and the younger children lived in poverty. His eldest son's household and the people of the village treated them with contempt on account of it. News of Carter's return reached leading figures in a number of fields. They came to the Carter house with gifts for his wife and son. The eldest son's family learned who their father was. They produced an agreement signed some time earlier and threatened to take the family's property under it. The matter was fought out in the courtyard of the Carter house.
