Sadie wants her life to go on the way it has. She is twenty-two, and for all of those years her mother, Serena, has arranged everything for her, and Sadie has never had to manage anything herself. Serena, a businesswoman with a great deal of power, then marries Simon, who comes from old money. Both of them are marrying late. The wedding is the talk of the whole city and gets held up in business circles as a model match. Simon has a son, Soren, and he and Sadie are now part of one family. Sadie starts wondering whether she still holds the place she used to in her mother's life, and she cannot picture what her own life will be once her mother has a new family.
