Julia Russell lives in her husband's family's house in the city, where the Smiths bring up her village upbringing whenever it suits them. It gets as far as an accusation that her small daughter has been stealing. She grew up in the countryside in a family that wanted sons. At eighteen she took up with Aiden Smith, an educated young man sent down from the city, and once their daughter was born she followed him back there. The theft accusation is the point at which she stops absorbing it. She takes her daughter and goes, and on the way she meets Richard Bailey, a former soldier who cannot use his legs. The Smiths keep coming after her, and Richard stands in front of the mother and daughter. What starts between the two of them as getting each other through it turns into something else. With his backing Julia teaches herself to read and write, works the sewing she is good at into a clothing factory of her own, and Richard's legs get stronger under her care.
