Sofia Luna and Bernardo Almeida were together when Bernardo's mother died of cancer. Sofia was diagnosed with leukemia around the same time and decided he could not take a second blow of that kind, so she said nothing about the diagnosis and asked to break up. Bernardo left the country to study medicine. He came back five years later with a cancer drug and a post as director of a hospital. He did not know that Sofia had given birth to his daughter after he left, that her leukemia had got worse, or that the hospital bills had run past what she could pay and she was sleeping under a bridge. He met the girl first, and through her he found Sofia again. The reason she had ended things started to come out.
