The Barton Girl

Lucy Barton's grandmother on her mother's side and her three uncles take her in during a famine year, when their own grain is running short, and it is the first time she has felt what a home is. She reaches their door by an odd route. In the present day she is an office worker who has just done three days of overtime in a row, and she falls asleep at her desk and wakes up in a famine year in someone else's body. Her father, her father's mother and her stepmother have dumped the girl, thin and weak, in a ruined temple and carried off everything the household owned. At the point of giving up she finds the memories of the body she is in, and among them is the way to her mother's family. Once she is settled she starts finding things of value in the mountains, and she uses them to show the village she is no jinx and to help the families around her. Her father's family and her mother's family then fall into a dispute over money for her upkeep and over who has the right to her, and Director Raymond Warren steps in.
