Sophie took a job at an electronics plant, worked more than one post at once, and was badly hurt by a machine on the floor. The plant paid compensation while she was still unconscious, and her brother Samuel and his wife Laura took the money. Her six-year-old daughter Cecilia went to the company herself to ask for it and was turned away as a fraud. The man who ran the company was Jason. Six years before that Sophie had been pregnant by him, and his parents had refused the match on account of where she came from. He fell seriously ill around the same time, and his parents made their help with his treatment conditional on her going. She left with the child. Jason spent the six years after that looking for the two of them. Samuel and Laura arranged for Sophie to be discharged from the hospital and left where she would not recover, and Cecilia got in the way of it. Jason worked out that the injured woman and the girl were the ones he had been searching for, and he reached the hospital. He then broke off the marriage his family had arranged for him with another woman. She went after Sophie and Cecilia repeatedly after that.
