Six years ago someone drugged Matt Jacobs, a doctor, and left him close to death. That night he slept with Gwen Towne, a CEO, and she saved his life. Six years later Matt was working as an orderly at a hospital under another name. He was looking into who had drugged him and trying to find the woman from that night. He rescued a small girl named Thea Towne. Thea could read minds. She decided that Matt was the father she had been separated from for years. Matt had just come off a blind date that went nowhere, and Thea arranged for him and her mother, Gwen, to marry on paper. Matt went back to the Jacobs house for his mother's memorial. His younger brother and the other relatives there made things difficult for him on purpose. Gwen turned up at the house and put the relatives in their place. Matt and Gwen grew closer after that, and Matt settled into the role of Thea's father.
