Two business families arranged a marriage between their children years before either of them was told about it. One of the children is Evan Cole, who goes to university under a name that gives nothing away and lets the people there take him for someone with no money. His girlfriend Tessa Blair believes it and leaves him for a man who has some. Three years before this Evan had saved the life of Vivian Hart, whose father runs Black Group. She decides the way to settle the debt is marriage, has Evan taken, and tells him that is what is happening. The two of them then find out about the arrangement their families had already made. At the engagement banquet Evan tells the room whose son he is, and the people who had been working on him from behind are dealt with in front of the guests. He goes into Black Group after that and learns the business. He and Vivian work through a run of plots against the company and trouble inside her family, with Tessa and another man among those still pushing at them from outside.
