John Cosby grew up in the mountains and was trained to fight by the man who raised him. That man also arranged a marriage for him, and John came down out of the mountains to keep the promise. On the road he came across Tessa Lane in trouble and pulled her out of it. Tessa is known for being unreachable and for freezing people out before they finish a sentence, and she also turns out to be the cousin of the woman he is engaged to. The engagement did not survive the introductions. His fiancee took one look at where he came from and called it off. Tessa offered to marry him herself, and they wrote it down as a contract, with terms and an end date and no pretence about affection. Then trouble kept finding her.
