Vivian Weller was the illegitimate daughter of the family, and she held that against her father through her teens even though he was good to her. She left the country over it and stayed away. Abroad she took over the Crimson Phoenix and ran it under that name for years. The news reaches her that her father has died. She goes home to bury him, carrying the years she spent refusing him. At the house her younger half-brother and half-sister are being pushed around by her father's brothers and their families. Vivian calls the board together and takes the chairman's seat. The two branches try to have the three of them put out of the group, and she answers every move until there is nothing left of it. One of the uncles then arranges a killing and has it laid on Vivian. She had put a camera in the room beforehand, and the recording shows whose work it was. A cousin from the other branch brings in a young man from another powerful house and threatens to shut Vivian and the company out of business, and Vivian sends for the eldest son of that house to end it. Her own brother is running crooked as well. Talking to him gets nowhere, so she arranges for him to spend three months in prison.
