Valen, the earl's son, was humiliating Aileen in public. Kaelen wounded him for it, and the earl had Kaelen sent to the border for three years. Two men at the border took him on and taught him to handle lightning. He spent the three years fighting the monsters that came at the line. He went home when the term was up. His mother was living under the earl's foot, and Aileen was married to Valen. Kaelen entered the knight trials, which meant standing in front of the nobles while they said what they thought of him.
