Chen Feng inspects used cars, and he is good enough at it that the dealership he worked with built its whole reputation on his word, advertising every car on the lot as accident free because he had signed off. His partner took the credit, cut his share, and talked down to him in front of staff. Chen Feng resigned with nothing lined up. He started again on his own, keeping to the same standard, and began writing reports for ordinary buyers instead of sellers. With his eye and his measuring tools he found what dealers had covered up: cars that had been under flood water, cars welded back together out of wrecks, odometers rolled back, deals worth millions built on a lie. His appraisals stood up when the sellers disputed them, and buyers who had been cheated used them to get their money back. Word spread through the trade. He built the business around what the reports said rather than what a seller wanted them to say, and other dealers began having to work to that standard.
