A Night to Forever

Shannon Newman wants an apartment in the city, the kind with three bedrooms, and she has never dated anyone. To get there faster she pushes her way into a job at the Shaw Group, one of the biggest firms in the city. One night she sleeps with a man she cannot identify afterwards, and by the next morning she and Jason Shaw have passed each other without either of them working out what happened. Months later she learns she is pregnant. She does not know who the father is. Jason is her direct boss. He is cold, particular about cleanliness, and has a reputation nobody has ever dented. He is also under pressure to reassure his grandmother, who is ill, so he proposes a fake marriage and offers to pass as the father of the child. Shannon agrees, and they set up house as contract spouses with the boundaries spelled out. They live together, argue with his family, and deal with the gossip at the office about whose child it is. A DNA test is raised as the way to settle it. Somewhere in the arrangement each of them starts wondering whether the person from that night was the one sitting across the table.
