Nora Lane wants the marriage she thinks she already has. She and Adrian Stone grew up together, she was his first love, and for three years she has lived as his wife. Then the marriage certificate gets damaged, and when she goes to the registry office for a replacement she is told the document was never genuine. Her status is still single, and no marriage was ever registered in her name. Adrian is registered as married to someone else. The wife on record is Clara Hayes, a woman he took up with during the two years Nora spent abroad, as a stand-in for her while she was gone. Clara now holds the position Nora believed was hers, and Nora, after ten years with him, is the one outside the marriage, and she sets about taking his arrangement apart.
