I Married a Dead General

Jacqueline slaughters pigs for a living and wants a place in a noble house. On her wedding day she catches her fiancé with her stepsister. To keep her dignity she marries the ancestral tablet of the dead General on the spot. Everyone laughs at the butcher's girl for going mad and betting her whole life on widowhood out of spite. The General comes back alive, and she becomes the one woman he keeps close. She does the accounts faster than the legitimate grandson and shoots from horseback more accurately than the household's idle young men. Inside the house she outmanoeuvres her elder sister-in-law and her stepsister and takes over the running of it. Outside it she works cases alongside her husband, far enough that the imperial court is shaken. She started as a daughter nobody wanted and ends up mistress of the household.
