Her Phoenix Majesty

The Second Princess comes upon Xie Yuan while he is on the run from the Eldest Princess's palace, and she helps him get away. She seems kind. Xie Yuan is a scholar who had been travelling the country when he strayed into a kingdom ruled by women, where a wife takes several husbands. His looks drew the notice of the Eldest Princess, who had him seized, brought to her palace and married to her as one of her consorts. He refused to go along with it and planned an escape. He takes the meeting on the road for chance, and through it he is drawn into the plotting and the struggle for power inside the court.
