Vernon Hill has been in love with Rosalie Cox since they were young. He finished the heir assessment his family puts its sons through ahead of schedule so that he could be back in the country, and he never said any of this to her. Rosalie is the second daughter of the house her mother married into. Her stepfather has designs on her and her stepsister has made a target of her. The plan she settles on runs through the younger of the Hill twins, Julius. What she learns partway through is that the twins had traded identities and that Julius had left the country with her stepsister under his brother's name, so the man she had been working on was Vernon. She uses the situation and leans on him. With his help she gets at what happened to her father, who was killed by her stepfather. The house comes apart over it, and her mother, who had gone along with all of it, turns herself in. The Hills have a marriage arranged for Vernon and he refuses to go through with it. Rosalie leaves the country after that. She spends three years abroad on design work and comes back at the end of it.
