Clara catches the boyfriend she has been with for years with another woman. She takes the car out to drive it off and the engine gives up on a mountain road. The one who comes to look at it is Terry, a college student doing part-time work as a mechanic. She brings him home and he stays. His own family has come apart, she covers what he needs, and the two of them get used to each other. Terry is the heir a powerful family has been looking for for years, and neither she nor he is living as though that were true. When it comes out, the gap between them in money and in age is more than the arrangement can hold. Terry leaves to get hold of his position and some say in what happens to him. He does not know Clara is pregnant. He comes back years later with the family and its money behind him.
