Every Tomorrow

Chen Mu runs a small supermarket in a hill town in the south, keeping to himself and telling nobody much about where he came from. He lost his money and his standing before he got here, and the quiet is part of the point. Lin Zhaozhao works at the hair salon down the lane and says whatever she is thinking, including to him. She decides she likes him and makes no attempt to hide it. The town supplies a steady run of noise and squabbles, and Chen Mu keeps finding himself stepping in front of her when one starts. He does not explain why. Zhaozhao keeps turning up anyway, and after a while he stops putting up a guard against her, which is closer to how the two of them start than any conversation was. They spend their time in the alleys where people cook outside and everyone knows everyone. Then Zhaozhao's ex-boyfriend comes back to town in a Maybach, wanting an audience for it, and takes a few shots at both of them. What Chen Mu has been quiet about is that he is the heir to one of the largest fortunes in the capital, and the man in the car has picked the wrong afternoon. Chen Mu handles him without much effort.
