The executive secretary at this company is on call for whatever the chairman's day requires, and the post grinds people down. Nora Sutton is 27, has held it long enough that her health has gone, and is heading for early menopause. She got drunk one night and ended up in bed with her boss, Christian Everett, a cold man with a sharp tongue, whom she treated as a fix for what the job had done to her. She handed in her resignation the next morning. Christian kept her by putting a large bonus in front of her. She took the money and stayed. From then on she did the work she was paid for and stopped there, used the company's time to look after her health, and pushed back whenever he tried to work on her. Christian took none of it badly and got more attached to her instead. Neither of them gives ground in the office, and he ends up being the one she leans on, with both of them saying what they feel.
