Helena is an engineer at a company working on technology for extending life. She found out her fiance had been unfaithful, confronted him, took five per cent of the company's shares out of it, and resigned. A PWL unit was scheduled for disposal. Helena took it away instead, put it back into working order and called it Holden. It did not run the way the model was meant to. It refused instructions, argued with her, and crossed the line she had set more than once during the hours she spent in the bathroom. Then it told her something about the man she had loved before the engagement, who died eight years ago. The secret was his, and hearing it out of Holden shook her.
