The wedding was a day off when Wendy found out that Michael had never gotten over Xena, the first girl he loved. She had spent ten years chasing him. She walked out of the house and went wandering the streets, and while she was out there she was robbed. Steven turned up. She had not seen him in years, and he stayed with her through it. She still meant to give Michael one more chance, and when she went to find him she saw him with Xena and saw that nothing between them had changed. She was drunk that night and she married Steven. In the morning she wished she had not. Steven went on treating her as though the marriage were something he had wanted, with no conditions attached to it, and over time that wore her regret down. Later she saw the scars on his back. They came from a fire at her school years before, the one she had been carried out of, and she worked out that the man who carried her was Steven and that she had spent the years since then loving the wrong person.
