Lucky Strike

She carries a grudge out of her first life, in which she was accused of something she had not done, and for a long time she can do nothing with it. She has been born again at the bottom, as a maid in a landlord's household, with no standing to pursue anyone. She rises inside that household on her wits and by refusing to quit, and in the end the landlord takes her on as his adopted daughter. Under that name she goes back to the place where she was wronged. There she meets the master of the estate, a man with a name for honesty, and the two of them begin looking into what the house is hiding. An attachment forms between them that neither is permitted. What they turn up is corruption, and it puts them up against the tyrants who hold power there.
