William Young is the man people in the city keep clear of, the one they talk about as a living king of hell. Flora Green is the one who ends up married to him. Her first marriage is coming apart, and on the night before the end of it she sleeps with a stranger and gets pregnant. After the divorce she is pushed into marrying William, without knowing he was the man from that night. He clears the way for her without telling her. Her career comes back to her, and the old scores from before the divorce get settled. Misunderstandings and lies pull the marriage close to breaking several times. She goes to give up the pregnancy more than once, and each time he keeps her out of it without explaining himself.
