Lauren Horton wants to give her husband Kyle Baker a child. Her heart will not take a pregnancy safely, so she agrees to a surgery that carries real risk, and she goes into it believing her marriage is worth that. Kyle has been sleeping with Grace, an intern working in anesthesia. Grace is in the room when Lauren is opened up, and Grace makes a mistake that puts Lauren in danger. Kyle sees what has happened and calculates. Rather than push for resuscitation, which would put the error on record and attach his name to it, he steps back from the table and leaves with Grace. Lauren is still on it. Her first love is a cardiac surgeon who has been abroad, and he comes back in time to take over the operation. Once Lauren is out of danger, the account of what happened in that room starts coming apart, and the version Kyle needed people to believe stops holding. His ambitions inside the hospital and the way he has treated the woman who married him both get examined by people with the power to end him.
