Clarissa Ainsworth wants her real sister to have the place in the family that was hers from birth. For sixteen years that place has been held by Isabelle, who turns out to be no blood relation to the Ainsworths at all. The daughter actually born to the family, Celeste, was switched at birth and grew up somewhere else, where she was mistreated for years. Clarissa brings Celeste home. Celeste arrives timid and unsure of herself, and Isabelle has no intention of stepping aside, so she sets up one trap after another for the newcomer. Clarissa keeps Celeste close, teaches her, and works at getting her recognised as an Ainsworth while dealing with each of Isabelle's schemes. She also starts asking who arranged the switch. Her enquiries lead to her great-uncle Walter, and to a further plan of his aimed at Celeste, which Clarissa moves to block.
