Jones has a son, Dapeng, and a daughter, Yuanyuan. She is divorced and raising them alone. A child falls into the water and Jones leaves Yuanyuan on the shore to go in after them. Traffickers take Yuanyuan while she is in the water, and Jones spends the next twenty years raising Dapeng and looking for her daughter. Dapeng marries and has a son of his own, and Jones plans to move in and help with the baby. Her daughter-in-law's family treats her as a peasant from the countryside. When Dapeng is ill and Jones offers a kidney for him, she finds she has been deceived. Dapeng takes his mother's side and divorces.
