Eleanor's stepson is caught in an explosion and is in critical condition. The only surgeon who can operate is the boy's father, Eleanor's husband. He believes the injured boy is Eleanor's own son by a previous marriage, refuses to operate, and spends the time with his mistress instead. The woman who caused the explosion is the mistress's mother, and when he reaches the hospital he operates on her. He then presses Eleanor to sign a letter of forgiveness clearing the woman of blame. Only after the signature is on the paper do the two of them learn whose child was on the table. He and his mistress fall out, and Eleanor begins arranging the funeral.
