Cause You Were Never Mine

Jade's mother gets sick and the treatment costs more than Jade has. Bruce is about to propose. Rather than hand him the bills along with the ring, Jade arranges for him to catch her with Dexter and lets him believe the affair is real. Bruce breaks it off and walks out, humiliated in front of people who knew them both. He goes to his family for backing and builds a company of his own, driven largely by the wish to be someone Jade would regret losing. Five years pass. Bruce is running the Morgan Group when Jade's name comes across his desk as a hire, and he takes her on himself, giving her a specialist post that keeps her under his eye. He works her hard and lets her feel the difference in their positions. Jade takes it without explaining anything about her mother, because the reason she lied has not stopped being true. They are around each other constantly, arguing over work and dragging up things neither of them has finished saying, and what Bruce thought was a clean grudge turns out to be tangled with everything else he still feels.
