The underworld in Lena Hartley's city answers to a man called Ethan Vale, and people are afraid of him. Six years earlier he was a street thug going out with Lena, who was a college student at the time. Her father broke it up. Ethan, wanting to protect her, told her he had fallen for someone else, and Lena left believing it. She is now a surgeon of some standing. Ethan comes to her with a serious injury and she saves him, which is how they meet again. He watches over her from the shadows and does what he can to win her back. She still holds the old lie against him. The feeling is there on both sides, and neither of them has managed to put the break-up behind them.
