The Heavenly Queen sentences the three of them to go down and make good the damage, which they can only do by gathering fortune-karma among mortals until the account is full. They arrive as the children of Cynthia Sheen, a commoner. The three set about improving their mother's lot while still small children. They get her recognised as the first embroiderer in the land. By accident they also bring about a match between her and the Emperor, and an embroiderer goes into the palace as Empress. Then a rat demon begins spreading plague among the people, and the three children, Cynthia and the Emperor go after it together.
