Victor Hayes delivers food for a living, and after four years with Yulia Wilson he proposes to her in a public square. She turns him down on the grounds that she intends to marry into money, then walks over to Theo Woods of the Woods group and joins him in mocking Victor. He beats a rival for Kang Qing on a racetrack, outbids Bai Youran at an auction for a jewel that clears up a fake-necklace scandal, and takes a technology prize that wrecks a Bai family scheme. The sisters grow attached to him. His grandfather starts pressing him to marry.
