Talia Stone has been able to walk for some time and stays in the wheelchair anyway. Her father asked her to, as a way of testing Jack Chase, the childhood friend she is engaged to, who believes the paralysis is permanent. It was permanent by the doctors' account. Talia had put herself in front of the car that was about to hit Jack and the nerve damage was judged to be for life, until her father, the richest man in the world, brought in the specialists who undid it. Her three older brothers hold rank in the military, in entertainment and in finance, and Jack knows nothing about any of that either. Talia meant to stand up at the wedding and tell him all of it at once. The day before, she finds Jack with her friend Rachel and hears what he says about her when he thinks she cannot hear. She carries on as though she has seen nothing and starts arranging what will happen at the ceremony instead. A thief takes her purse in the street and Aiden Brooks gets it back for her. She asks him to marry her, half as a joke. He finds out what Jack has done and takes her up on it.
