Gavin has his father pretend the family is bankrupt so the relatives will show what they are. The news gets around and the uncles turn on them, pressing and humiliating the family. The second and third uncles use the grandmother, who favours them, to drag Arthur out and beat him in front of the children and force an apology from him. Arthur, angry and worn down, hands over the land deed. Gavin has already seen the plan coming and has donated the entire compensation, so the deed the uncles collect is a sheet of paper worth nothing.
They turn to the merit stele at the ancestral hall next. At the unveiling the two uncles work together to attack the family in public, saying they will strike Arthur's household from the genealogy and drive them out of the village.

The family works out the truth eventually and regrets what they did to her. Her memory has come back by then, and she has given up on them.
