Every ghost that attacks Fred Carson leaves him stronger than it found him. One comes for him and he survives it, and after that he starts putting himself in front of them on purpose. Before the attack he was an office worker with debts and a salary that did not cover them. What the attack gives him is a system that pays out in power each time something hits him, and the worse the attack, the bigger the payout. His approach to earning a living changes accordingly. He joins the agency that handles hauntings and works up to running a team. The jobs there are graded and he takes the high grades. He and his team put down a blood vine creature, the head of a sect that eats people, and a countess. He is then picked to represent his country at a tournament in the capital against the creatures.
